BedsideTV™
The need to share information between hospitals, physicians and patients has never been greater. Whether the hospital is becoming an ACO or proactively addressing chronic disease management; there is a clear need to work with the patients and their primary caregivers.
Calance Corporation, with Microsoft Health Solution Group, has created a platform that provides a way for hospitals, referring physicians and patients to seamlessly exchange data with each other.
BedsideTV™ is a TV based portal through which the patient community view data held within Amalga and interacts with institution’s patient portal
In its simplest form, BedsideTV provides a non-intrusive platform for the hospitals to share information stored in Microsoft Amalga UIS with the patients using existing technology (coaxial cable and a TV). Hospitals can use this platform to increase patient counseling compliance for AMI and HF Quality Measures or use it for informed consent in a planned fashion. For others, showing clinical images drawn from Amalga on the nearest TV screen is a useful adjunct to patient discussion.

A hospital can enhance the value of data flow by interfacing with Microsoft HealthVault (a PHR), and a Patient Portal to enable even more sophisticated uses. Communicating important information to patients and their families is never easy in the confines of a hospital, when they are not at their most receptive. Instead a nurse or support staff member familiarizes both patient and family members with their own HealthVault account while the patient is still in the hospital. All the discharge information issued on paper then follows the patient home, electronically. Hospital’s patient portal, powered by HealthVault, can be used to communicate
- Post discharge care instructions
- Rx schedule clearly indicating which prescription are due at what time
- Notify the patient for upcoming appointments or
- Share events of importance and health videos
Patients can further use their HealthVault account for keeping in touch with their primary care provider (PCP) or to monitor the trends for their chronic disease and avoid a potential life threatening incidence. For example – a diabetic patient can use a Microsoft HealthVault enabled glucometer to upload the latest readings to Microsoft HealthVault and enable their PCP to get results in real time. The PCP can pro-actively trigger an appointment for the patient if the results are outside normal range and avoid a costly medical emergency few days later.
